What we collect.

As little as a class needs.

When you sign the sheet

The sign-up sheet asks for your first name, your email address, the class date you want and, if you choose to give it, your city and state. You tick a box to agree before it is saved, and we keep the time you ticked it.

If no class is open, the same form puts you on a list to hear when new dates are set, and holds no seat.

To stop one connection filling the sheet, we also keep a scrambled code made from your network address, in place of the address itself. It is used only to limit how many sign-ups one connection can make, and it is deleted from your line on the sheet about a day after you sign up. (The separate code used to count visits, described under “On this site”, is kept for longer.)

Before a sign-up is saved we check that the part of your email address after the @ can receive mail, by asking Cloudflare's public DNS service. Only that domain name is sent, never your address.

Where it is kept

On the sign-up sheet itself, which is a database run for us by Cloudflare, and in our contact list at Brevo, an email and contact service that stores it on our behalf. In Brevo it sits in a list used only for Coding Coach class sign-ups.

Each new sign-up is also emailed, through Brevo, to Coding Coach's own address, so that the person who runs the class can write to you. That message holds the same details: your first name, email, class date and, if you gave it, your city.

Brevo and Cloudflare are separate companies that process this for us under their own terms. We don't give it to anyone else.

What we use it for

To hold your seat and to contact you about the class you signed up for: your seat, how to pay, the class link and how to get set up. Signing the sheet does not put you on any other mailing list.

Nothing is sent automatically when you sign up. A person writes to you.

When you pay

No payment is taken on this site. The class is paid by Venmo, a separate company, under its own terms; we email you the details after you sign the sheet. Your bank details stay with Venmo. We never see them.

On this site

No ad pixels, no ad networks and no third-party analytics.

We count visits ourselves, on our own database. For each page opened we keep: the page and the time; the address of the page that linked to it; any campaign tags on the link you followed (utm labels, and ad click ids such as gclid or fbclid); the full user-agent line your browser sends, which names the browser, its version and your operating system; whether it is a phone or a computer; and where your connection appears to be, as a country, region and city, with the name and number of the network operator it belongs to. Your network address itself is not stored.

To tell one visitor from another we keep a 16-character code made from your network address and browser, scrambled with a secret key that stays on our server, in place of the address itself. The code stays the same for as long as your network and browser do, and it is stored with each visit. No cookie is set to count you, and none of this is shared or used for advertising.

When someone signs the sheet we record that too: one line saying a sign-up happened, for which class, and where that visit came from (the linking site, campaign tags, device type, city and region). It holds no name and no email address. It is not anonymous, though: it carries the same visitor code as your visits and the time, so we could match it to your line on the sheet.

Visit records and these sign-up lines are deleted after 13 months.

Cloudflare, which runs the site for us, keeps short-lived technical logs of the requests it serves. We use them only to find out why something failed.

The setup checklist saves your ticks in your own browser. They never leave your device.

In class

The class runs on a video call. Other students will see your name and your screen when you share it. Use a first name if you prefer.

The Cloudflare account you create in class is yours, made directly with Cloudflare. We never see its password.

The website you publish in class is public: anyone with the link can open it. Build it with made-up data.

What we don't do

We don't sell or rent your details to anyone.

Questions or removal

Email us and we'll remove what we hold about you where we can. Venmo keeps its own record of a payment, and we keep any record we are required to keep.
