Des Moines · Live online · Mon Oct 12 · 8 PM Central

An AI coding class for Des Moines, done in one evening.

Coding Coach is a live online class for people in Des Moines who have never written code and have a tool they wish existed. You describe it to Claude in plain English, and Claude writes the code. By 9:30 you will have made a live website yourself: your idea, on the internet, with its own link you can text to a friend.

The session is 90 minutes: about 30 minutes getting everyone set up and connected, then the hour of building.

When and where

Taught from Omaha. Taken from your kitchen table.

Des Moines and Omaha share a time zone and a stretch of I-80. The class is taught on video from Omaha, about two hours west, starting at 8:00 PM Central and ending at 9:30 PM. There is no room to drive to in Des Moines, West Des Moines, Ankeny or anywhere else.

That suits this class. You build on your own laptop, and what you make ends the evening on the internet, so it opens on your phone too. When you get stuck you share your screen, and with five people in the class the coach sees it.

Coding Coach is an independent class, not affiliated with Anthropic.

Who it suits here

Built for the office with one spreadsheet too many

A lot of Des Moines works in insurance, finance, agriculture and state government. Those are offices that run on spreadsheets, shared drives and one person who knows how the tracker works. That is the kind of small, specific tool this class is for: something your software does not do, that would take a developer a day and that nobody will ever budget for.

One caution, and we will repeat it in class: build with made-up data. Do not put client, policy, patient or employee records into a class project (it ends the evening on a public web address), and check your employer's rules before using an AI tool on a work laptop. A personal laptop and sample data are the right setup for the evening.

Examples, not past student work

What Des Moines could build

I want an app that

  • An insurance or benefits officelines up three renewal quotes and shows what changed.
  • A claims or underwriting teamtracks which files are waiting on which document.
  • A farm or co-op officelogs bushels by field and totals the harvest.
  • A small nonprofitkeeps a volunteer schedule and shows open shifts.
  • A farmers' market vendoradds up a Saturday's sales by item.
  • A youth wrestling or swim parenttracks times or results across a season.

Where this fits

A course, a meetup, or one thing built

  • If you wantA structured course in a programming language

A continuing-education courseCommunity colleges run non-credit courses in programming languages. Schedules and formats vary, so ask the college for its current list.
  • If you wantTo hear what local people are doing with AI

A local AI meetupGood for ideas and for meeting people. It is not a class.
  • If you wantOne live website of your own by the end of the evening

This class90 minutes, five people, live online. No certificate and no career track. You bring an idea and leave with it live on the internet.

A course teaches you a language. A meetup shows you what is possible. This class gets one thing of yours built. Plenty of people will want more than one of the three.

FAQ

Before you book

Is there an in-person class in Des Moines?

No. Every Coding Coach class is live online, taught from Omaha. You join by video.

What time does it start in Des Moines?

8:00 PM Central, ending at 9:30 PM. Des Moines and Omaha are on the same time.

Can I use my work laptop?

Probably not. Many company laptops block new software, and many employers have rules about AI tools. Use a personal Mac or Windows laptop.

Can I build something for my job?

Yes, if you build it with made-up data. Do not bring real client, policy or employee records into class. Once it works, ask your employer how it could be used with real data.

Is this a college course or a certificate?

No. It is one evening with no credit and no certificate. If you want a course in a programming language, a community college's continuing-education office is the place to ask.

Do you teach anywhere else?

The same class is open to people in Omaha, Kansas City and Denver, and anywhere else with a laptop and an evening.

Also taught live online to people in Omaha, Kansas City and Denver. The main class page has what you leave with and the main FAQ, and the setup checklist has every step before class.
